God's Boxes

I have in my hands two boxes,
Which God gave me to hold.
He said, "Put all your sorrows in the black box, And all your joys in the gold."

I heeded His words, and in the two boxes,
Both my joys and sorrows I stored,
But though the gold became heavier each day, The black was as light as before.
With curiosity, I opened the black,
I wanted to find out why,
And I saw, in the base of the box, a hole,
Which my sorrows had fallen out by.

I showed the hole to God, and mused,
"I wonder where my sorrows could be!"
He smiled a gentle smile and said,
"My child, they're all here with me.."
I asked God, why He gave me the boxes,
Why the gold and the black with the hole?
"My child, the gold is for you to count your blessings,
The black is for you to let go."

Freedom writers film analysis

Film Analysis Worksheet
Step 1. Pre-viewing
Title of Film: Freedom Writers
Principle filmmaker(s)
What do you think you will see in this motion picture? List three concepts or ideas that you might expect to see based on the title of the film or what you already know about this film.
Concepts/Ideas
1. It would be about the people/students who can write anything they want, whatever it is all about. Sky is the limit.
2. A movie of people whose lives are tied of their past, responsibilities, problems, struggles, guilt, sins committed and many more.
3. People who needs to express themselves freely. They are the ones who cry out for something.
Step 2. Viewing
Physical qualities of the film: Describe all that apply.
Freedom Writers works because the groups of teenage actors they’ve brought together in it are fantastic, and because the script has enough sappy, tear-jerking moments to keep you involved. Hilary Swank is tenacious and determined as Gruwell, but its moment by moment performances from her kids that make it worth watching. (http://www.cinemablend.com/reviews/Freedom-Writers-2024.html)
The Special effects and music was appropriate. Live action/dramatizations was realistic and practical. Narration was helpful for us viewers to be given information and elaborate things/events happening in the movie.
Interviews (Who did the filmmaker interview and for what purpose?)
Ms Gruwell features the life of his students. The filmmaker’s purpose is to give credit to her student and to pay forward.
I like so much the camera angles, lighting, music, narration, for they had contributed much to create the atmosphere in the movie.
What is the mood or tone of the film?  What emotions does the film evoke in its viewers?
The mood of the film was strong, tough, rebellious, and real worlds challenge in each other.
Step 3. Post-viewing (or repeated viewing)
Circle the things that you listed in the previewing activity that were validated by your viewing of the motion picture, and then answer the following:
What is/are the central message(s) of this movie?  Be specific.  Use examples from the film to support your choice.
Its central message is that everyone is created by the Lord equally yet uniquely. Everyone has the right to live life up to its way. Everyone has an inert potential to be unleashed. Though you are tough, there would be still a soft and goodness part in your heart.
Paying forward.
Discuss the bias in the film (point of view of the filmmakers).
The bias in this movie was the racial discrimination over white and black Americans, freedom of expression and the right to live equally among other people.
Consider the effectiveness of the film in communicating its message. As a tool of communication, what are its strengths and weaknesses?
The strength of it was the characters played their roles wonderfully; they were able to portray and express it practically. They go beyond word can tell. Their actions/ dramatizations speak more.
How do you think the filmmakers wanted the audience to respond?
He wants us to respond fairly. To have fair treatment, value of each other, love each other with no racial discrimination.
Does this film appeal to the viewer's reason or emotion? Explain the role of each in this piece.
Yes, it did appeal to the viewer’s emotion.
How does it make you feel?
I as a DevComm, it prompts to me how important it is to know the people you are communicating to, for as communicators we need to really put our shoes unto theirs to relate and for an effective communication relationship. I as a daughter also, I need to love my father no matter how painful the past things he has done to my family. I feel so blessed to still have the freedom express myself, especially here in the Philippines who is a Democratic country.
Write a question to the filmmaker that is left unanswered by the motion picture.
How were the freedom writers living now?
Would there be a part two of this; where in the focus would be the changed life of each other?
How did you manage to have such film as this? How did your media planning gone through?
Step. 4. Personal Reflection
1. In the film, what was the significance of the 'line game' shown in the classroom scene to the entire story? What was the deeper meaning behind the game?
The line game was so awesome for me. It bridges the students together, know, understand, love each other better and most of all respect each other better. It breaks the boundaries between races, social status and teaches them how to work as one- be united for progress and peace. This would helps us to learn about each other in an interactive, non-threatening way.
2. How did the characters in the film changed their perspectives in life? Site one person/character that you felt attached with/or can related to? How?
The students believe themselves as brave soldiers in some war, and fill their diaries with empty justification for the racial hatred and brutality they’ve idealized. The activities conducted by Ms. Gruwell helps them a lot to change the course/ perspectives in life. In list are the Holocaust Museum visitations, line game, writing a journal/diary, inviting speakers to answer their questions and clarify things that they want to, and even the books help them as well. But most of all is the persistency and patience of Ms. Gruwell. She helps them to discover what is really life, how to value and live for it.
3. If you are to make a "Toast for Change," what will it be?
You won’t remember most of their names, but their stories will leave an impression on you.
Like them I would make a toast for letting go last year of my hatred and anger towards my father since I was a 5 year old. I had learned to love him now and longs to be in his arms someday. My parents are separated but though I am a product of a broken family, the Lord never fail to provide our needs and unconditionally love me. One thing is that it encourages me to put unto writing my life experiences and continue my blogging, though I don’t have the hand of a writer. I really love this movie. Some of my insights ma’am is too personal, I can’t post it here.
