God's Boxes

I have in my hands two boxes,
Which God gave me to hold.
He said, "Put all your sorrows in the black box, And all your joys in the gold."

I heeded His words, and in the two boxes,
Both my joys and sorrows I stored,
But though the gold became heavier each day, The black was as light as before.
With curiosity, I opened the black,
I wanted to find out why,
And I saw, in the base of the box, a hole,
Which my sorrows had fallen out by.

I showed the hole to God, and mused,
"I wonder where my sorrows could be!"
He smiled a gentle smile and said,
"My child, they're all here with me.."
I asked God, why He gave me the boxes,
Why the gold and the black with the hole?
"My child, the gold is for you to count your blessings,
The black is for you to let go."

Sorry For History

Ever Since  I started to go to school, history has been a boring subject for me. Not only that, but I am not good in it for my memory is not functioning well in terms of this subject. I am not good in events, people, biographies and geographical data.

However this semester I took History 10.1, instead of Psychology which was close already during my enrollment.

I felt so sorry for my History class because I've been a mediocre since the semester had started. I am a sleepyhead in this class. Nevertheless, Mr. Mark Anthony Ngo, made History interesting for me and it was not boring.  I like the way he teaches us. He was not dependent to one source. He's not a bookish type of teacher. He always throws and gives mind bugling questions to his students. Wherein I personally encourages to be a critical thinker and understanding the relevance of it in our context today.

Everything in History is important. The what, when, where and who are typical discussion in this subjects since high school. Yet Mr. Ngo lead us in also paying attention to the "How" and "Why" of the series of events in the history. That we may understand fully, and relate it to our present generation.

I should have learned more if I do advanced reading and sleep early every night, or should I say get enough rest, so that I will not feel sleepy in his class. Now, I am more encouraged to read more books, especially the BIBLE, which has more historical events that could be very relevant today.to be updated in National  and International News through watching television, listening to radio and reading newspaper (this one is expensive for me).

He once quoted, "History repeats itself." Every Second is a history. What you make, do, think, say and live out is will contribute to your history as human. It will be your legacy for the next generation. I am now conscious of the how and why of events.

Shout-Out
HIS story encourages me to study history.
History challenges and helps me to e critical in His story and share it to others through blogging and by being nurtured of His word.

Oh my it's CropSci!

"Crop Science...? Oh my... basok2x, tanum2x jud mo ana ai...!"

The very first time I hear the word Crop Science, I think about going to field for plowing, planting and familiarizing yourself in the scientific names of each crops and other agricultural raw materials.

However, it's beyond taht. Crop Science is a systematic  way of studying and applying it in or daily basis of living, especially in Crop Production.

LABORATORY

Every Monday Morning we have a Crop Sci Lab Class at Manresa Farm. We meet once a week only and have a lot of activities to do. I've learned to have hard work in one of our field work and understanding the farmers condition in toiling the land. I was taught by that experience also to be critical in analyzing the seeds using the software that neurologists used. then to be practical in applying the methods or strategies in farming,  we learned as a class. However I should have learned more of the analysis part using the software if I had a laptop to practice on.

Mr. Dennis Apuan, our professor had presented to me the value of the class to our course-Development Communication. Where we will be the said responsible in putting these agricultural analysis in publication or broadcasting, for further help or supplement for the farmers and any agricultural sectors. To be the hand and mouth of the Agriculturists and scientists.

LECTURE

Our ever blooming professor, Mrs. Mary Jean Apuan helps us in discussing the science side in Crop Production. I have learned in class about the basics of Crop Production, classification and it's functions. Yet, I should have learned more if she can make her voice louder and clearer. However, right now I am planning to review my notes and start doing pocket farming.

The final output of these class was to observe the Salu-Tabu in our Capitol. That day, I appreciate all the things we discussed in a four walled classroom.

They may have lapses, as all of us do, they make me understand now why Development Communication is in the College of Agriculture.

Chocolate

I am an addict of Chocolate, I

Yet another chocolate day, made me feel so odd.
Yesterday, I woke up early around 5:55 am.  For my sister Sharrah and Cousin Errell rushed towards school and the rain was pouring so hard. So hard that made the river so high. Later that river beside my auntie's house in Phase II Scions, Canito-an, was overflowed and flooded the whole community. It was my first time to witness how the water rises vastly. We need to pack up our things immediately, put the appliances in a high places as  possible (hoping that the water can't reach them)  and evacuated the area. Crossing the flooded streets with water in a knee level, freaked me. I can't believe it. The river was so wild with its color brown that somehow reminds me of the chocolate I left in the refrigerator.

We stayed for awhile in the mother in law of my auntie Ellen. The water has not yet reach them. Yet in just 5 minutes we had received a news from a neighbor that the water was already a waist level high, then the water had started to rise and reach Lola Mars  house (Mother in law of my auntie Ellen). That pushed us to evacuate again the area. My mother Jessie and Auntie Ellen (yet I call her also a mama), requested me to go to Carmen and bring the clothes we packed up in Carmen (my Lola Esing's house where mama Jessie, my sis and I lived also).

I met also my classmates for the payments of the theater tickets, Magazine in our DC84 and Marketing Reports for our 2major production in Devcomm. Unfortunately, "hindi sila sumipot". So I need to go back in Canito-an to bring food for my Mom and Auntie. For they haven't receive any relief goods from the government.

After the flood had subsided, we cleaned the whole house. We use the Dipper, Pail, dust pan, brooms and foams to take take out of the water and rid off the mud. My auntie Ellen, her husband Uncle Jerry, my mother Jessie and me, had a general cleaning "limas". It was so tiring. so we had a break for a while, have some coffee and eat the bread that my lola had bought for them. I look for the chocolate and eat some of eat.

snapshots of the flood
This time, every time I see a chocolate I am reminded of how odd was the experience I had in the flood in Canito-an.

Semester to fill the clicks away

As a Devcom student this is the subject I really enjoy the most. The pressures, the moment with our professor, the immersion thing, was memorable. Everything was so amazing. Simply amazing, yet can’t be fully expressed well.
light tent photographty exercise
I learned in this photography class of mine how to see things in this world differently. I start to appreciate little things, to marvel in the art that God had set right before our eyes, to convey these arts in a gallery called Developmental journalism/ Photojournalism. It was a great challenge for me to be enrolled in this class, since I don’t have my personal Digital Single Lens Reflex Camera.
I learned also about the Basics of Photgraphy, especially compositions. This topic really brought me to an exploration of the world. Seeing the world with the eyes as lens and mind like a shutter.

I should have learned to value those things that he had taught us. I didn't say I wasn't able to value it but I'm so sad to take for granted all the excercise he had given. Where in it was the best avenue for me as a student to unleash my potentials and developing my eye. My submission of late outputs shows how lenient am I sometimes. I became so lenient for I am tired of asking help and from my classmates to lend their camera to me. However, he encoourages me to do better in my excercises. I may not be a good photographer this day, but I am certain that someday I will make my name in line of photography. Not with the Irishmaeesin photography. com ( :D), but of a name in the photojournalism field. Thanks to my teacher Mr. Evans Rosauro Yonson who inspires me to pursue such ability to make picture not just shot pictures.

With this , I desire this summer to pursue my request in the scholarship about my DSLR cam (though la na koy DC89 class), take photos to tell people of how was our society now.

I will take my notes with me also as a guide in takiong photos. Take it by heart, Shoot by heart. "Observe, think and shoot", Sir Evans said. This helps me understand that photography doesn';t matter on the camera but on how we observe things, immerse ourselves to the community, think and shoot to capture thoughts and emotions of people or tell stories.

I love to be in a photography class. Hopefully I can still have him as my teacher next sem. So chill, yet a warm thoughts for us melts our hearts.

with Sir Evans- Desperada

Life of clicking, doesn't end here. It had just begin our journey for it. I devCom, I love DC89.

Photo Marathon

Aggie cheering Squad
The 2011 Intramurals with the theme, On the Edge of Glory, was amazing. It has breath taking stunts during the Cheer dance Competition . Aggies got the fourth place this year. most of the Cheering squad of the said college cried. It was for the first time that my heart was broken. upon knowing how the team had worked hard which lead to some of them be injured. I won't be shocked if they can't hold back their tears.

Like me. So sad, I can't have a good shot this time. My 6mm digital can barely cover the very stunning event. it has an aperture of 3.2. However I can't still get a good focus in my picture.

It has always been my prayer to have a camera and may our scholarship program will provide one for my easy learning and application in photography.

Mula alas dos ng hapon
Hanggang gabing madilim,
Maraming tatalon
Bawal ang budhing maitim
Let's go green for AGGIES team!

Rise of Medina in process

Medina. Reneilda Simoun, accessory vendor is stalled beside the ongoing construction of Medina terminal. “ sulod sa kwarentay sais nako nga pagkahimugso aning Medina, karun pajud mi na ka baton og kaugalingong terminal”, she bubbled happily. Attending to his salable accessory items, she shared to me how their mayor is working on the development of their municipality. She shared that the residents are so excited to the terminal to be done and looking forward that their municipality will soon be “bibo”, the vendors like her will be given the chance to be formally legally stalled inside the market or in the terminal.
The said project has been started since April 6, 2011 funded by Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan. The implementing office, Department of Public Works and Highways- Region 10 has a contract cost of three million for this project. The target completion of construction will be on September 2 this year.
One of the workers whom I had interviewed was a resident of the said community for 30 years. He told me that they are more or less 20 workers for the ongoing construction of this Multi-purpose building (Municipal Public Terminla). However the work was so light for him because he was not just working for the sake of the wage but he was also excited of their first terminal to be realized. He also added that there are also other developments in their community. “naa poy gitukod bag-o lang na Motor pool sa unahan...  he added, “didto gi na junk ang mga guba na motor parts dayon ayohon pod sa libre…, pero terminal pod to siya dadto.” He also expresses, "Pero aside pa pod ana, naa pod mi gihulatan na ma improve pod dani sa amua… kanang among hospital.”
According to manong worker (who didn’t want to be named), the hospital has been constructed two years ago but until now there is still no materials, tools and health personnel to be consulted by the residents. “Hinaot, ma aksyonan na tana na sa amuang mga officials dani, ky lisod man jud kayo ang pagpatambal sa amua kung magsakit kami ky layo paman amu adtoan…sa Ginoog or Cagayan pami mudayo aron lang mag patambal….

Though the municipality has health centers, it is not sufficient to attend the residents’ needs of health care. Now medina is in the process of progress. They had newly constructed roads, plaza, tourist spots- Alibuag Cold Spring, Motor pool and the on going construction of Medina Public Terminal. But they are still calling to their officials to attend also their health care needs, a hospital that will have efficient tools, materials and health personnel.

Photojournalism Blog 5: Photographic Composition with bit of Action photography

As the days passed by and activities or exercises in our Photography class go further, I realize how important it is to have your own camera. Either you had bought it, rent or borrowed. As long as you can perform the shot lists with no time limit.

This exercise five about photographic composition allows me to see the world in an artistic way. I was able to marvel on the things I thought before as boring and ordinary subject, to be photograph of.
Aggie bldg in a pattern shot
Pattern. One of the things I usually go to is the Aggies building, however I wasn’t able to appreciate its beauty until I had comply this activity. This time everything seems so new again to me. I seemed to be a total stranger to my campus though I stayed for almost three years already.
Forms. I was amazed to capture the capsules (benches in the Sc dry pond), which formed a letter C, with a benches beside it forming a square as I view it in the fourth floor. I wonder how come I over looked this beautiful spots in the University.
Another thing that I won’t forget in this activity is the head-on shot. Wooohh… that’s a breath taking attempt to photograph a speedy vehicle heading towards you. Risking your life as to take the best shot you can. In reality I understand that to be a photojournalist is to be a risk taker.
Sequential shot thrills me as I capture a guy who is practicing Sepak Takraw. It thrills me and excites me ion what to be captured after the three consecutive shots I will had. Amazingly as the camera records the event, I am so happy to see that I was able to have a shot of his strike. With this I was challenged to really work on my skills in photography and to be patient in requesting a DSLR camera from our scholarship program.

Action Photography: Shutter Speeds and Apertures

Shutter speeds and aperture... I deal with them last July 23 with my friend Chum (to whom I give thanks for allowing me borrow her cam), as our Photography Lab exercise number four. Then a wonderful experience in Carnival after.

This exercise took my breath away as I comply the shot list given to us by our professor. Chum, a classmate and kind friend of mine lend her cam for the assignment given to us by Sir Evans. We tour the campus just to search for some actions to capture. And we landed in gym. Seeing the students who played badminton, table tennis, basket ball and a group of young men with their coach having their practice for Sepak takraw, had excite both of us to capture real action.

Before taking photographs, we review the shot list and get myself familiar with her cameras setting. We also observed first our subjects movement. Then I try it looking through the viewfinder and click the shutter release button. I was so amazed with how a camera can capture actions. We shoot and shoot in different subjects and angles.

Light tent Photography Experience

Our second photography lab exercise was about Light tent. It was my first time to hear such word or term for the course.

During the activity, we were asked to make a box, with holes at four sides. We are also asked to cover it with white muslin cloth that gives an effect to the subject. We also made use of Halogen lights and miniature things.

me and ynez, during the activity
The SLR cam of my group mate was automatic and has a feature like the DSLR. It has a light meter, not like the typical SLR cam we used last time in the 1st lab activity which is to take photos inside the campus’ vicinity.

-credits to Sir Evans Yonson
I had a hard time in taking such photos in this exercise because I don’t know how to analyze the small circle in the viewfinder. Which Allyn my group mate said, that it was the one you will check for the focusing of your subject. Then one of our halogen lights was overheat, so I don’t have any enough light for the shoot.

I hope I can do it again and with my own cam someday and the expertise on SLR cam’s parts and function.

My 1st Photography Community exposure

Last July 11, 2011, all third year DevCom students who enrolled in Photography class had a community exposure.

The venue was in Brgy. Lapasan. Both section A (devjourn majors) and section B (edCom majors) were grouped and designated to different host families.

Nanay Patria preparing our snack :D
Photo taken by me
My group mates- Chum, Keith, Iris, Mich and I were warmly welcomed by Nanay Patria, our host family. She quickly prepared a snack for us. She served a juice and biscuits. We had introduced ourselves to her properly, state our purpose why we are there and many more.

I am so blessed with her as she shared to us how she brought up her children and grandchildren as well. She shared to us how they strive as a family for the education of everybody. Now she has grand sons who are nursing students in Capitol University. One of them is a graduating student this school year. Their house had testified how inclined to medical field they are. I saw a lot of medicines, certificates and medical equipments in their home. However, we were not able to have a good scope inside their house. So we asked her permission if we can go outside and take a photo walk. “oo, kayo oi… mas dasigon jud tamu na mugawas. Adto mu didto dapit sa dagat ky tsada kayo to picturan… na saon taman gamay man ni amonmg balay oi, la pod moy ma picturan dani.” she encourages.

As we step out from their house, we started to be amazed of the beauty of the site. Many children are playing. Their water system, livelihood and house structures amazed me.

My groupmates Iris and Keith, familiarizing the DSLR parts
(a digicam black and white photo taken by me, while waiting for my turn)
Yet my eyes was captured with the Kawayan. The bamboo bridge they had was so nice that it become my subject. As we go along, we reached the unfinished sea wall that protects the residents from the rising of water level. I notice that there lots of boats. So I took some pictures of it, but the rope which ties the boat and seal it from water leaks gets my attention, so that makes my other subject. The other subject of mine was a shoes I a seaside…, while I was looking on those wrecked shoes everywhere, I remember Nanay Patria who shared how their family experience a flood as the seawater level rises. The house beside theirs was already gone so their whole family evacuated immediately.
So the time I saw those shoes, I can’t help myself but to look back on those lives that was taken in that flood.

As I take all those photos and following the guidelines given to us, I realized that taking a god photo would never be easy. Like me who doesn’t have a camera that time, is waiting patiently for my group mate to lend me her camera. Another thing is I am not familiar with her cam and don’t know how to do it -the aperture and shutter speed thing. I am a tactile learner so I can’t relate to or lectures in Photography for I don’t have any cam to hold and practice on. Along the way, the jeepney we rode, kay namasada pa, that is why we arrived late at the community. So we started late too. We were given only an hour and half to take photos, which limit our exploration to the area. However, I was able to appreciate my life and excited as a devcomm student. To capture thoughts and emotions.

My 1st Click experience in an SLR camera

It is usual for Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan students to see their fellow Atenistas taking photographs inside the campus. However it was unusual for me to take photographs using a single lens reflex SLR camera.

In our photography laboratory class, we were taught about Do's and Dont's when handling a camera, parts of a camera, how to take photo then loading and unloading the film.

June 28, 2011, was a memorable day to me since it was this date I took my very first SLR photos. But before that, we were instructed first and taught how to load the film, which we find very difficult. Our group really do it with care. We are so careful upon loading it to the camera because we don't want to have it over exposed.

The different parts of a camera also was introduced to us. It was a great help for me who has no SLR and DSLR ever. It was sophisticated then, I realize. There are a lot of settings new to me such as shutter speed, for I was only used to typical cameras only-the point and shoot one, that's all we got in the family.

As we step outside the DevCom-AVR, I have thoughts in my mind that this really it, the start of my journey as a photojournalist. I took photos in all angles, now then all things become new to me. I was amazed of the campus' beauty hidden. Truly beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As I take photos, I really enjoyed it yet with a bit fear of what will be the result of those clicking the shutter release. For an SLR cam doesn't have a preview setting. Once you take it, that is the only you can have. You can't erase those pictures you don't like. I was also challenged then when taking photos using that typical SLR cam we have. For it doesn't have a zooming lens, aperture and shutter speed. Thus, we need to draw closer to our subjects and we need to ask permission from them as to take them picture as a requirement in our photography class. It was not easy then, because some of the declined and it was very "sayang"!

Other thing I had learned is that a photographer must be as quick as a winking eye to click the shutter release button. Ihad spotted a priest walking along the hallway in the Lucas Hall. I was so amazed of that moment when he move along with me. My mind is telling me to click the shutter button but I look back to my class as they encouraged me to click, but when I get back my eye to the subject, had gone out. I lose the desired angle of that subject. Nanghihinayang talaga ako!

I learned that you need to keep an eye to your subject and capture those moments in a click. Ever second passed by, is a history, so I need to link history with my fingers as to clicking it.

All fears and worries had left us when had submitted our film canister to our professor, Sir Evans. My day was just a click away.

Poverty in our way

What is  poverty? everyday we see people suffering from it? How come poverty still lives today?

Filipino children who seek for recyclable materials at a garbage dump.
Poverty, refers to being unable to afford basic human needs, which commonly includes clean and fresh water, nutrition, health care, education, clothing and shelter. It is also lack of basic capacity to participate effectively in society.

Recognizing that poverty is the Millennium Developmental Goals top priority, these photos got my attention. It captures the reality about how was our world in the issue of poverty now.
I remember when I had attended a month long intensive leadership camp in Davao City, last April 11-May 9, 2011. One of our sessions had touched this particular issue, poverty. It was about Social Responsibility session. It brings me back to the documentary videos presented to us by OMF literature.
The video presents how the Philippines suffers from poverty, though we are rich in natural resources such as Agricultural products, tourism, brilliant minds of citizen, human labor and many more. Some of our fellow citizen, were invited by the different countries to work for them. As our brilliant people leave the home land, Philippines were given the less competitive ones.

How sad to know that we- who is rich was captives of poverty due to lack of support from the government officials. People tend to forget the essence of stewardship. We are suffering from poverty not because of our insufficient resources. Nonetheless, it is because of lack of governance and good stewardship of the the God-given resources we had, around us.
